Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third daughter in their family. Her father's death as a carnival barker, when Ruth was just an infant She was required to keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She left school after two short years to pursue acting. This was not an easy path to follow. Although she got a job in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine but no theater jobs came her way. She then worked as an hat-checker at an evening club, before deciding to call it quits and returning to Boston. As an usherette, she worked during the day and then was a part of the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. She also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
